Meet Jess

Hi, I’m Jess, one half of WanderCouple. And I’m attempting to escape from the life that everyone expects from me. Put it this way, I was never good at conforming growing up and it sure as hell hasn’t changed as my adult life is proving to be just as challenging.

I don’t have your typical ‘Aussie Dream’ of the big house, husband and three children.
I do have a want to fulfil the only dream I have ever had and that is to travel the world.
Yes, I know it’s stereotypical, but that’s just not my personality. It has taken me almost two years with the help of Drew to face my fears (which I realised is pretty much everything!)

I’m an over-thinker, stress-head and all round atychiphobic (fail phobic). I have never really gone out of my way to try anything I thought I might fail at; I just remained in my comfort zone. My life changed when we went on our first adventure, something inside of me relaxed. It was like I was breathing in a new type of air. I guess I caught the travel bug.

I’ll be writing all about our journey, from tips and tricks for backpacking, festival information, along with stories from our experiences. After our first overseas adventure we were overwhelmed by the inaccurate and outdated travel info online and in the travel guidebooks. This stirred the idea of creating a resource full of accurate and ongoing information for travellers. We hope the information you find here helps you on your adventure, as it will have helped us on ours.

Meet Drew

Hello, my names Drew Hopper, the other half of WanderCouple. I’m a professional freelance travel photographer with a passion for culture, people and the natural world. I’m a regular contributor to Australian Geographic, covering photo essays throughout Australia. Through my photography I try to capture moments that define my experiences with the vision that they will impact and inspire an audience in a way individual to each person. My goal as a visual storyteller is to create powerful imagery to tell a story and convey a sense of discovery.

As a child I was constantly on the move travelling around Australia in the family motorhome. Living a fairly nomadic lifestyle has it’s ups and downs, but I’m the type of person who is happy living out of a backpack if it means a life of adventure and discovery. Through my photography and my passion for exploration I strive to embrace every moment that presents itself.

I’ll be sharing photos from our endeavours as a couple, capturing the beauty of the places we visit. You’ll also find my photo tips and other useful bits and pieces relating to travel photography in our blog. Most of the images on this website will have been taken by me unless otherwise stated.

Our Backstory

As a lot of Travel Bloggers stories begin, ours also starts with us being stuck in an almighty rut.

We met in the winter of 2010 photographing a music festival in our hometown of Coffs Harbour, shortly after I finished high school and Drew was finishing his photography studies.

We were (and still are) madly in love. We went on many adventures, going camping, hiking and always searching for new places. After a year of struggling to find work and Drew only having small amounts of work our discomfort began. I luckily fell into a traineeship doing administration at a local hospital and Drew was working for a real estate and local newspaper as a photojournalist, but our relief soon turned to despair. We had officially entered “the real world” as our parents would call it. All of a sudden our sparkles were dulled with less time for each other and doing the things we love.

We did what we could to keep happy, but wanderlust was building up within. A few months before our third anniversary we strolled past a travel agents window and it was like something clicked in us! Next thing we know we were on a plane bound for Bangkok, unaware of the change in our lives we were embarking on.

After 100 days adventuring through some of the most amazing landscapes and feeling what we thought was every emotion possible, we arrived home to Australia. Within days we addressed the facts; we were homesick for a place technically, not our home. It was hard to handle and even harder to explain to our family and friends. In short we had caught the travel bug.

This brings us to the present. Our wildest dreams are coming true as we take a giant leap of faith on an indefinite quest to travel the big wide world. This is our moment to share and encapsulate with like-minded individuals. The laughter, tears, anger and all emotions in-between. We won’t sugar coat things and we will certainly take you on our journey with our posts, pictures and videos.

We hope you enjoy and please always feel free to comment, share, ask questions or give us feedback

Love and Light
